As November is fast approaching, I thought I would share with you some guidelines for making voting decisions in elections. I've been thinking about doing a blog on this and I received a call from someone today asking me for advice. So that prompted me to go ahead and do it. Here it goes:
1. Realize that you have a three-fold nature: you are a spirit, you have a soul, and you live in a body. The Holy Spirit lives in your spirit. Your spirit is smart! (1 Thessalonians 5.23)
2. It's okay to discuss politics and candidates with others, but make your own personal voting decision.
3. Listen to the candidates give speeches (if and when possible), and look at their voting record to see where they stand on the issues.
4. Prioritize the issues that are important to you. Ask yourself what God's Word says about those issues (Romans 12.2)
5. Prioritize the values that are important to you in a candidate with the Word of God as your filter.
6. Pray for God to direct your decisions (Proverbs 3.5)
7. Vote in line with your conscious. Let your conscious be your guide and trust it (Romans 8.14,16).
8. Vote for somebody. The world is facing perilous times. It's important for us to do our part to make the world as good as it can be. Voting is something you can do to make a difference. (2 Timothy 3.1).
9. Whoever gets elected, pray for them (1 Timothy 2.1-4).
10. Put your trust in God, not the government (Psalms 20.7).
11. It's okay to attack issues, but don't make personal attacks. (the candidates or the people who believe differently than you on the issues).
12. Don't argue with people. Politics is not worth losing your friendship over. (Summit folk: "Please be kind to one another" Romans 12:10; 1Peter 4.8,9).
I don't claim to have the ultimate voting guide, but at least it gives you somewhat of a basis for making informed and anointed decisions in the upcoming elections. Do your natural and spiritual due diligence, then vote your conscious.
